The best time on the musical calendar is happening this week: The Super Bowl Halftime Show. One of the biggest, most-watched annual concerts for the last 30 years, mega pop/rock acts Boyz II Men, Diana Ross, U2, Janet Jackson, Paul McCartney, Prince, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and Katy Perry have headlined the 15-minute set since Michael Jackson reinvigorated the tradition in 1993. (We’ve also heard that they play two halves of a football game before and after, but we have no comment on that.)
The NFL’s massive Black audience and cultural significance through its relationship with hip hop has yet to…

Amorphous, the online mashup sensation, sat with The Renaissance Project earlier in 2020, primarily to speak on their mashup project, Beyoncé x KAYTRANADA, which was subsequently taken down by Bandcamp. We covered a lot of maybe more interesting topics, as featured in our profile, “Amorphous was the winner of 2020 — and he wasn’t even trying”. But we have condensed, edited and provided some of the interview transcript so you don’t miss out on this valuable insight into the mind of one of the year’s top creatives.
Juwan Holmes, The Renaissance: Hello Jimir, thank you for talking.

Nothing we planned for happened in 2020.
Maybe some of us did plan for chaos to ensue. But, not like this. We did not plan to have to protest several murders due to police brutality, for months, during a deadly viral pandemic, that was itself killing hundreds of thousands, while the entire world was supposed to stay home as much as possible, but most in America had to fend for themselves while their government did close to nothing for them.
On top of all of that, we were expected to live.
Amorphous, like us, did not plan for 2020 to…
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, is a polarizing figure, both internationally and within the European country. Like leaders in America, Macron has to deal with police brutality, and one of the latest instances of it in Paris has made it even more difficult for the politician to navigate.
Michel Zecler, a 41-year old Black music producer from the southern Paris area, was ambushed by police officers in his music studio. The officers brutally beat and assaulted Zecler, unbeknownst to them, on video via security cameras. They repeatedly kicked, punched, and hit him with a truncheon.
The officers…
The newest collaborative partner for Director X: A bunch of wrestlers.
X, born as Julien Christian Lutz and formerly known as Little X, was the BET Director of the Year in 2016. The once “protégé of pioneering director Hype Williams,” X is known for his top-tier music videos that only the cream of the crop in pop and hip-hop seem to work with — including Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Ariana Grande and Kanye West — but outside of music, he has also put together commercials and ad campaigns for Apple Music, Ebay, Spotify, Alexander Wang and the Gap. …
UPDATE, Jan. 20, 2021, 2:00 A.M. EST: The tactics Kodak Black and his legal team employed here did, in fact, work. On his last day in office, President Donald Trump granted Kodak (known as Bill K. Kapri) a commutation.
As noted in our original story below, this commutation only applies to Kodak’s federal crimes. While this will likely result in his release from prison, he is still subject to criminal proceedings in multiple jurisdictions and this does not guarantee his continued freedom. That being said, a Presidential pardon holds significant weight in society and in the legal profession. …
